About Greening the City

On our crowded planet, town gardens, parks, open spaces and city nature reserves create conditions for a surprising variety of flora and fauna to thrive. Some plants have adapted to a changing environment whilst others have been planted for specific purposes. The judges will look for green city photography that celebrates the juxtaposition of the concrete urban scene with the organic beauty of plants and trees. For this category city photography becomes about the sheer adaptability of plants and the benefit they bring to urban life.

As more of the population moves to urban centres green is quickly becoming an essential ingredient of this story, with a growing awareness of the importance of plants and green spaces in cities. Winners of this category all communicate an element of this relationship through a green perspective on city photography and share insights into how plants live side-by-side with people and architecture in different cities around the world. Perfect opportunities for green city photography can be found in scenes you may walk past every day. City photography and green photography are becoming ever closer linked through converging social and environmental trends.

Wider benefits

Many of us live in urban areas, so it’s important to recognise how vital these plants and green spaces are for happy and healthy lives. This category is the ideal way to not just raise awareness, but to take ownership of the subject. Garden photography, city photography and photography in general present the ideal medium through which to achieve this kind of positive action. It’s your city.
