While out walking between Sierra and Clovelly on Devon’s north coast we turned into this sunken lane or holloway. I was immediately aware of the timeless feel and a strong sense of seclusion given by this ancient enclosed route. Holloways, or sunken lanes, are ancient tracks that may have been created by long term erosion or by the building of parallel embankments. Sometimes they are overgrown by trees with their branches creating a living tunnel.
