Description

Patterns is the name of the garden designed by Dan Kiley for Pierre and Elise du Pont, and was to be his last residential garden. The walled potager, with its long water runnel and tall wooden tuteurs, felt majestic in the early morning air. Photographed on the first day of summer, vegetables were not yet climbing up the tuteurs, but the beds were full of lettuces, herbs, etc. Four willows at the corners of the potager give it a wistful backdrop. I photographed this garden for The Cultural Landscape Foundation. They were planning to mount an exhibit of the works of landscape architect Dan Kiley to celebrate his legacy. I read about Dan Kiley and went online to find photographs of his landscapes, public and private. I toured the entire property the day before to determine when to photograph the various areas. The property has some extreme changes of level, is heavily wooded in places, and is spread out, making it a challenge to photograph.
