When I visited the Japanese Landscape at Kew, I was reminded of my parents’ ‘Willow Pattern’ dinner plates; a British tableware design, inspired by original fine white Chinese porcelain decorated with a cobalt blue pigment. The plate design depicts a Japanese fairy tale of two thwarted lovers, within a landscape of water, bridges and a pagoda; bearing strong similarities with this garden scene, where the gravel has been painstakingly raked into patterns suggestive of water ripples. I converted the photo to monochrome and added a blue tint to echo the design of the plate.
