About meI am a visual artist working predominantly in photography. The way we see is informed and constrained by what we know. My work investigates the perception of reality.My sole current project concentrates on the garden. It investigates how relinquishing the notion of control can be at the centre of an artist's work. I utilise the wabi sabi principles of embracing the natural, the imperfect and the impermanent.Our personal interpretation of what we believe to be true has a profound impact not only on our individual lives but on our collective culture. My work is intended to engage the viewer as a co-conspirator in creating meaning and layers of thought and associations, challenging the perception of what constitutes reality.My work reflects on age in a changing society and the passing of time: We hope to live longer than previous generations. My generation is one of the first to have the liberty and to need the courage to pursue a creative and productive life beyond what was, for a time, the point of retirement. We can—prejudice permitting—take up new careers and engage in new ventures.I work mainly in the medium of photography but I have also created installations. I am interested in the process of hand-making paper, especially in the Japanese tradition (“washi”).My work has been published and exhibited internationally, featured on radio and national television, and used as book covers and in magazines.I am a published writer. My art-philosophical text Photography and Realism and collection of essays on reality in photography is in publication. My captioned photography series I Object, published as a book, was instrumental in overturning the building of a quarry by documenting the resulting environmental destruction. The Imperfect Garden is my latest project.
