Upon exploring this ancient forest for the first time, I wandered off the main path and came upon this gnarled and knotted Fagus (beech) tree set in a small clearing. Clothed in autumn colour it was such a magnificent sight to behold.

This tree lives safely in the Savernake Forest, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and comprises of a sprawling 2,750 acres.
