Description
Ammophila arenaria (Marram grass), in the sand dunes at the Norfolk coast, at sunset. This tough, clump-forming grass is a pioneer species which creates a mat of roots, helping to stabilise dunes to enable a more diverse plant population.
A decade ago, this stretch of beach along with many others, was hit by severe storms which uprooted the grass and washed away large parts of the existing dunes. It has taken a long time for new growth to start establishing, but with the increased frequency and severity of storms (due to climate change), this fragile ecosystem is, alongside many other habitats, at risk.
