About Wildlife in the Garden

In a world where natural habitats are being depleted, gardens are a haven for wildlife. It is then the job of garden and wildlife photography to capture these wild creatures that use our gardens and parks. They can become familiar companions, or rare and special visitors. These may be creatures that only you are privileged to see - a nocturnal hedgehog for example - or they could be tiny insects that are easily overlooked - except by the keen photographer!

They may also be creatures you can only see in a nature reserve. This category is about all the creatures that enjoy gardens and green spaces, from beetles and butterflies to birds and badgers. Use techniques of both garden and wildlife photography to try to capture that moment that shows wildlife flourishing in an abundant, verdant environment.

IGPOTY has always embraced the word 'Garden' in its broadest definition, that is a 'Garden' could be; a back/front/balcony garden, a local park, landscapes and forests, after all - Earth is everyones' Garden.

For the avoidance of doubt - IGPOTY does not accept any images of taxidermied animals, nor that have been photographed using live bait, no captured animals, nor use of animal models.

Insights

Compelling wildlife photography often shows the character of the creature in a unique and revealing way. Capturing elements of behaviour are key to wildlife photography and so are reflected in winners of this category who blend this eye for behaviour with beautiful and diverse green environments.

Wider benefits

Wildlife photography is noted for its ability to raise conversations on conservation. At IGPOTY we’re all about doing this in a positive way and building respect and awareness for nature through the beauty and importance of green environments. You can help direct the flow of this conversation by photographing animals/insects through the combined lens of garden photography and wildlife photography. This mix of understanding and styles can create stunning results and immense inspiration.

Do not be afraid to show insects and animals at all ages and stages of growth. As long as respect is shown for them.
