About Simone Pioli

Born in Reggio Emilia, Italy, in 1983. Environmental engineer by profession, amateur photographer by passion. Passionate about nature, mountains and all photographic arts with particular interest in nature photography. I started photography in 2011 as soon as I had the chance to buy my first camera (a Sony A230 with Minolta lenses) and from that moment photography became my greatest passion. In 2011 I followed photography courses of the Refoto Association of Reggio Emilia with which I learned to use the camera and studied the photography of professionals and the best international authors past and present.Since 2011 I have gradually invested in photographic material, tackling all photographic genres (landscape, macro, wildlife, portrait, still life, architecture, street, etc.) and passing through all the new concept cameras such as the Sony A77, A77ii, A99 equipped with Sony Zeiss lenses with A-mount connection (16-35; 24-70; 85/1.4) and specialist lenses (Tamron 180 macro, Minolta 400f4.5, sigma 300/2.8 + TC, etc.) up to the highest recent A7Rii. In 2019, due to a home burglary, I lost all the photographic material I had and in 2020, thanks to a crownfounding from friends, I managed to buy back an A7RII and two lenses (17-28 and 28-75) and then slowly expand the kit. but focusing only on what I actually need, i.e. more specialized optics for more creative photographs.I love using (analog) filters to create particular effects in the scene, but without interventions in intensive post. For example, I use cross screen filters for photographs of the Milky Way, black diffuser or soft focus filters for portraits and landscapes, ND, polarizers and GND.At the moment I have a kit consisting of Sony A7rii, Tamron 17-28, 28-75, Sony 85/1.8, Sony 70-200GM, Sony 200-600, Opteka 15 f4 macro, Laowa 60 f2.8 macro 2x, TTartisan 100/ 2.8 Bubble Bokeh, flash and popeshield diffuser for macro, Sirui tripod and Benro and Gitzo backpacks and many other accessories. The way in which I shoot varies depending on the subject or type of photography, for some photographs I study or imagine them, drawing them in a notebook, and then trying to obtain them at the moment of shooting or waiting to be able to obtain it (naturalistic and macro ) or based on what I feel in that moment or simply observing what surrounds me. In any case, my photographic philosophy can be summarized with the following words “Istanti d(‘)instincts” which in English can be written as “D(‘)iNstinct Moments”.Photography is like an instinct, the scene or the thought behind the photography can overwhelm you without making you think about anything else until it generates the photograph in the mind and heart of the person taking the photo, the moment is unique and only those who see the scene can understand it until it is imprinted on a sensor. A shot is unique, distinct, unrepeatable in time and space and is instinctive because pressing the button is the effect of photographic instinct.

As part of my profession I have carried out architectural photographic reports which have been published in sector publications and books including: “MARIA SALUTE DEGLI INFERMI – La Cappella / The Chapel DEAS Careggi – Florence”; “CORE - Oncology and Hematology Center of Reggio Emilia”; “Lamborghini automobili, velocità e colore dal 1963 ad oggi” – Ed. Artioli.I collaborated on still life photographs of gastronomic products (Grissin Bon) and on event and wedding photographs. I have photographic screenings under my belt in local clubs and events as well as exhibitions as part of the European Photography event in Reggio Emilia.I have participated in several local and international photography competitions, a list of which is given below:2017 - Special mention (COMMENDED) in the “Sony World Photography Awards 2017” photography competition organized by the World Photography Organization in the Open Section, Travel Photography Category;2017 – Photographic exhibition “Giochi di memorie” within the Off Circuit of European Photography 2017 (organized by the Municipality of Reggio Emilia);2016 – one of the ten winners of the photo competition on the social network Instagram for the “MeetMcCurry2016” competition in the Milan stage (meeting the great Steve McCurry);2015 – “Life” photographic exhibition within the Off Circuit of European Photography 2015 (organised by the Municipality of Reggio Emilia);2014 – Photographic exhibition “Sentinelle” within the Off Circuit of European Photography 2014 (organized by the Municipality of Reggio Emilia);2013 – First place in the photography competition “Oltretorrente Photo Marathon 2013” for the photography themed “Fuor dal Cerchio”;2013 – Photographic exhibition “Giardini Meccanici” within the Off Circuit of European Photography 2013 (organised by the Municipality of Reggio Emilia);2013 – Photographic exhibition “Flussi Temporali” within the collective “Metamorfosi” organized by the photographic association Refoto within the European Photography Festival 2013;2012 – Third place in the photography competition “Casalgrande photography marathon – 2012” and special jury prize;2011 - First place in the photographic competition "Soragna Photographic Marathon - 2011" for the photography themed "Amore in città".
