Deep Forest by David Southern

Kelp boasts a palette of rich colours naturally arranged to artistic affect by tides, currents and the wind, but their beauty is often overlooked. It is during the late spring and summer months when the forests look at their best. At this time of year, the lowest tides allow access to the lower shore to photograph the living forests from dry land. Out at these furthest margins of the land, when surrounded by such elemental nature, it is easy to forget that these important habitats are under threat. A changing climate is affecting the distribution of the kelp forests and marine pollution is evident in even the most remote stretches of coastline.

Marine forests provide a vital role in capturing carbon as well as providing a nursery for a myriad of marine creatures. As well as being one of the most productive habitats on earth they are also, in my view, one of the most attractive to photograph.

The images within this portfolio are named as follows; I: Golden Rays, II: Sunlight Dance, III: Breakout, IV: Tresses, V: Crossed Wires, VI: Deep Forest.
