Autumn Botanical Mandalas by Elizabeth Kazda
Autumn is a wonderful time to harvest interesting botanical specimens for my work. I want to create art that challenges the viewer to look at the natural world differently. Through macro/close-up lenses, I seek to give an intimate look at botanicals by drawing attention to details like colour, texture, shape, and pairings between a plant/leaf and its components.
These unique characteristics are emphasized when rendered within the rotational symmetry of the mandala. Nature and geometry blend in mesmerising symmetry. Making the works was a process of discovery, as the overlapping areas of the design formed surprising combinations. For each photo I captured between 24-64 exposures in camera at equidistant positions, with the subjects placed on a black background attached to a rotating platform. I also enjoy exploring nature and finding specimens to use for my work; most of my subjects come from my yard, my husband’s gardens, or other local sources.
Specimens used include; Acer, Miscanthus, Ginkgo, Hedera, and Pinus.
