Rosa ‘Women of Italy’ by Fiorella Gaggero

On the hills of Sanremo, in Liguria, lives a rose breeder who through careful research and experimentation creates particular and surprising rose cultivars. From among these, I have chosen to represent the story of the rose named Rosa 'Women of Italy'.

It is a rose created for the 150th Anniversary of the Unity of Italy, and so called for the strength and courage that Italian women have shown in the history of our country. The flower has three colours; Green, the colour of hope, Pink, the feminine colour par excellence and Yellow, the colour that represents International Women’s Day in Italy, it symbolises the strength of women who do not give in.

In recent years 'Women of Italy', has also become a 'manifesto' against violence for all women. To showcase the journey of this rose I have taken some shots trying to represent (in addition to the beauty of the flower), various aspects of its development, from pollination to full bloom, and then decay. As containers, I chose glass tubes to recall the complex scientific work required to realise the flowers. In the images, I have inserted a light texture in post-processing, to create a soft, natural atmosphere.
