This one-ton sandbag is part of a collection that has been deposited in the concrete crossroads of the Cumberland basin, surrounded by a pair of large locks, a dual carriageway flyover and industrial swing bridge. I’m not sure if these temporary flowerbeds were originally put down by the Council or some free-range gardeners but either way I felt it was an inspired addition to an area largely void of vegetation. I thought the garish warm colours contrasting against the bleak urban background captured the playful and possibly mischievous spirit in which some random acts of gardening take place. No special preparations, it was off the hoof.
