Description

The yellow and black caterpillars of the buff tip moth live gregariously and feed on a number of different deciduous trees, sometimes defoliating entire branches. The adults then fly in June and July, frequenting mixed woodland. I paid a few visits to the tree in my garden waiting for the caterpillars to form a suitable pattern on the leaf, before removing the leaf and placing it on a ‘plamp’ to photograph in my studio. I carefully placed the leaf back on the tree after taking a few images, using a clothes peg so as not to disturb them.
