These trees are photographed from the top of Martinsell Hill on the chalk Downs above the Vale of Pewsey, Wiltshire. The three prominent trees are English oaks Quercus robur. Two are still living - the third stands as a prominent dead stag-headed tree. The remaining trees in the picture are a mixture of ash, oak and beech. I return to this high spot regularly in the autumn and winter. It is an endlessly inspiring spot when the dawn light is always dramatic, especially when a light mist fills the valley. Standing on top of the hill taking in the scene, listening to the call of the raven on a still dawn morning is wonderfully fulfilling.
