Protected by the National Trust, the heath is an important natural habitat providing homes for a range of wildlife from Dartford warblers to red deer. In the summer months it is carpeted by both common and bell heather as well as western and European gorse. After deciding on this composition it took several dawn visits before I was rewarded with this combination of warm light and dramatic sky.
