I obtained permission to photograph these allotments when I discovered the spectacular view of the London skyline from the elevated site, but when it came to it I was frequently more drawn to the small decorative structures built by the plotholders and to the colourful mixture of food plants and flowers. On this early summer evening I stayed past sunset to watch the elegant streaks of cirrus cloud turn red across the rising moon, a fleetingly harmonious match for the sweet peas and upturned terracotta flower pots.
