Description
At the Dark Hedges of Northern Ireland, the centuries-old beech trees line a narrow road famously known as the Bregagh Road, creating a striking ‘natural’ tunnel. The trees, which were originally planted in the 18th century by the Stuart family to impress visitors approaching their Gracehill House estate, have become an iconic landmark. During autumn, the ancient branches stretch and twist overhead, while the path below is adorned with a rich carpet of golden and copper-coloured leaves.
The Dark Hedges gained additional fame after appearing in Game of Thrones as the “Kingsroad”, adding to the mystical atmosphere and drawing in photographers and tourists from around the world. Due to their popularity, in order to aid in their preservation, vehicular traffic has been prohibited since 2017.
