I have been visiting the Hermannshof garden for several years now, but never before have I seen the venerable, white Magnolia × soulangeana 'Alba Superba' (which was planted in 1890), in the centre of the lawn, in full bloom like this. No frost had damaged the delicate blooms, and the evening sun made them gleam in soft gold against the light. The gnarled branches reached down to the ground and created a lively play of light and shadow on the lawn.
