An Iris pseudacorus (yellow flag) seed case containing seeds in the process of being shed. I chose this seed case because it was almost complete - one or two seeds are missing, which helps explain what was going on.

I was taken by the sharp contrast in the rough texture of the external protective case and the smoothness of the ‘discs’ being protected.
