Still Life with Tulips in a Quintal
Still LifeImage details - Still Life with Tulips in a Quintal
Description
The fan-shaped porcelain quintal (vase) was often depicted in 17th century Dutch still life paintings, to enhance the display of tulips. Such flowers in the first part of the century became status symbols (as part of ‘Tulip Mania’) and prized bulbs fetching as much at the time as a year’s wages or even a house, that is until the tulip market crashed. In this composition, fruit and pastries are laid out for guests, while opulent silver complements the precious tulips.
