Angels

Description
The photograph shows chrysanthemums, submerged in a tank of water with milk added – which I created to represent angels and hope. This photo is the second in a series I created on grief, I see the white chrysanthemums emerging from the darkness of grief, but still weeping. Each one represents a person left behind.
This shot is part of my ‘Transience’ project – including submerged flowers, where I explore the meanings of flowers, along with their history, uses in different cultures and folklore surrounding them. I build up a picture of the flower then use specific techniques and colours to portray my message. Sometimes they are used to demonstrate emotions or fleeting moments in life. White chrysanthemums in particular are frequently used following death in many countries, and are given in bouquets or used in funeral wreaths, they can be very symbolic as a way of showing sympathy to those who are grieving.
I created this scene whilst negotiating my own grief, following bereavement and chose the white chrysanthemums as a symbol of hope, of the purity of love, and to emerge from the darkness of grieving.
