The high desert of the Oregon Badlands Wilderness, east of Bend in central Oregon, is a unique habitat with vast open woodlands of gnarly ancient Juniperus occidentalis (western juniper), living with other interesting plants such as Leucocrinum montanum (sand lily).

Of the handful of junipers in the area which have been dated, the oldest is 1,600 years old. Bushwhacking off-trail can lead to encounters with some amazing old trees.
