In the Sanjiangyuan National Park, over 4,000 meters above sea level, there are many large or small lakes dotted around; many of them are glacial lakes. Since the late 20th century, the lakes there have shrunk as a result of human activities and overgrazing, however Sanjiangyuan was made a National Park in 2016 and environmental degradation there has effectively been curbed.
