What the judges said:

We all love single plant portraits - but it is much more difficult to make a successful picture of many plants together in association. To me, this picture is as close to perfection as you can get.
I love the contrasting shapes and textures of the three types of flower. All the plants are in perfect condition. The photographer has recognised a very skilful piece of planting and has made a straightforward rendering of it, in lovely light and with no tricks.

What the judges said:

"This stunning image of Hydrangea petiolaris is a worthy winner of IGPOTY. What I particularly like about the shot is the way the photographer has melted the rich purples and oranges of the Hydrangea into the out-of-focus background, creating a delicious melange of colours. The focus on the single delicate Hydrangea flower is spot on, creating a striking and unusual winter portrait."

What the judges said:

"This humble autumn scene has been elevated into something challenging and truly spectacular. The dark inky mauve of the lake creates the perfect canvas on which these beautiful birch trees bear their last hints of autumn colour, which glow on a centrally focused plane of light.

The scene has been framed beautifully and feels completely balanced even with so much to look at. Each branch, twig and leaf has incredibly defined detail which exhorts us to stare deeper and deeper into the image. When we do, the photograph reveals a stained glass window of nature, steeped in mystery and metaphor."

Jill Welham

'Fireworks'

Overall winner

The winner of the International Garden Photographer of the Year - Competition 12 - is Jill Welham with 'Fireworks'.

What the judges said:

Jill’s image has proven that even old techniques are still capable of relevance, originality and immense beauty. Her knowledge and passion for the process has resulted in an extraordinary exposure of the Allium, adding complex textures and colour profiles analogous to the pioneering botanical cyanotype prints by English botanist and photographer Anna Atkins in the first half of the 19th century. The resulting exposure clearly draws from this rich and interesting heritage, but is unmistakably different in its approach and execution, making an image fit for the modern age in both its ability to communicate the beauty and importance of plant life as well as its capacity to represent the empowerment of women in art and science.
